Little Dude decided he wanted some plants in his room to make it like a “wild rain forest.” A 5- year- old boy’s, creative imagination is never dull or uneventful. Of course, I wanted him to be free to be imaginative, and I wanted to help him come up with something. I asked him if we could make some plants and things out of paper, or if I could buy him some plastic and silk plants. “No,” he said. “I want real live plants.” And then it came to me… DIY Terrarium.
Making a DIY Terrarium, was the perfect solution! Real live plants but all confined in a glass apothecary jar. A Terrarium is easy to take care of for Little Dude and me. It is also something he could keep it in his room.
DIY Terrarium
What You Need:
1 large glass apothecary jar with lid
River rocks (just a few to help with drainage)
Orchid potting soil (orchid potting soil is better quality and better for Terrarium environment)
Scrap paper
Miniature decorative items (We used mini dinosaurs.)
Aquarium gravel
Plants for the terrarium (We used African Violets and Ferns)
How To:
Lay out some scrap paper in your work area to collect the mess.
Wash and dry out the apothecary jar and lid.
Place river rocks in the bottom of the apothecary jar to help with drainage.
Then add 1-2 inches of aquarium gravel onto of the river rocks in the apothecary jar.
Next, add a thin layer of orchids potting soil.
Remove the plants from the container and put any extra soil from the containers into the apothecary jar. Make a small hole in the orchid potting soil and plant the plants (make sure you leave some space for them to grow).
Then create a path with extra aquarium gravel and add decorative items (we added mini dinosaurs).
Water the terrarium with just a few tablespoons of water.
Replace the cover and enjoy.
Clean up the scrap paper and toss your dirty clothes in the washer with some all® free clear laundry detergent, follow the directions for use on the packaging exactly.
Terrarium Tips
If your terrarium becomes too steamed up with condensation on the glass, just remove the lid and allow the extra moisture to evaporate.
The watering needs of the terrarium are low) A place with filtered light is best.
Keep out of direct sunlight.
Little Dude loved planting and making the terrarium. You know boys and playing with dirt. The scrap paper collected a ton of the mess. However, our clothes needed a good cleaning! I picked up some all® free clear laundry detergent from Publix to fight our tough stains, whiten whites and brighten colors, while I was grocery shopping. It’s ideal for Little Dude’s sensitive skin and allergies. It’s the number 1 detergent recommended by Dermatologists, Allergists, and Pediatricians for sensitive skin and removes 99% of everyday and seasonal allergens (disclaimer: “including cat and dog dander, dust mite matter, ragweed, grass, and tree pollen”).
What are your gardening & planting plans this summer? Don’t forget to pick up some all® free clear and join the all® free clear community to connect with other amazing parents!
