People always said a proposal comes when you least expected it. Well, that was true for me. I had no clue. None. Zippo. And who pulls off a surprise of a lifetime on April Fool’s Day?
I never noticed or though anything of the amazing 2- dozen white roses he had given to me when I arrived at his house. He lived 2- hours from me and we commuted to see each other on the weekends, for 2 ½ years before we got engaged and married. I was out scrapbooking with some friends and didn’t think much of the 2- dozen roses, I guess.
We had plans to go to beach with friends the next morning, the same beach where we had our first “official” date. I woke up in the morning; and he was ready to go to the beach at about 7:30 am, he was getting things together, ironing his shirt, packing towels, etc. He wanted to get to the beach early. I was not ready and did not want to go to the beach that early. I went to the gym for a Spin class.
When I came home he had the car packed and was trying to rush me out the door. I could not understand why he wanted to get there so early. Since this was our first “official” beach day of the season, I wanted to stop at the store and get a new beach chair. After we left the store, I realized that I forgot a hair tie. I made him stop again so I could get a hair tie. After that, we were finally on our way to the beach.
The poor thing must had been so nervous, because he took a wrong turn. I had no idea anything was up. We finally arrived at the beach after all my stops. We set up our chairs and our umbrella on the beach.
Then he said that, “we were the first ones there so we needed to get a good spot”. I was just excited to get to the beach and work on my tan. He asked me to go for a walk and I said, “no”, because we had just got there and I just wanted to lay out. 10 minutes later he grabbed my hand and said, “lets go for a walk”. I got up and was thinking, if I just go with him now maybe our friends would be there when we get back, and then I can just lay out.
We walked on the beach and I told him that I didn’t want to go to far. He said, “just a little farther”. Then he stopped and got down on one knee. I didn’t know what he was doing, so I kept saying, “what are you doing down there?” He said, “baby listen”, and after the 3rd or 6th time, I finally listened, he said something like, “ I can’t think of any other place to ask you, if you would spend the rest of your life with me. Will you marry me?”
Of course I said “yes” all those years ago. I was so surprised. I remember that day like yesterday. He “Fooled” me so good. I never thought that he would ask me to marry him on April Fool’s Day. When I called our family’s to tell them, everyone thought I was April “Fooling” them. Until I sent a picture of my hand with the ring on it. Happy April Fool’s Day!
