Growing up the Forth of July was a day celebrating my father, grandfather, and all the other men and women who fought for our freedom. The day started with our family going down to the center of town to watch the 4th of July parade. My brother and I loved watching all the fire trucks and service people march along the parade route.
My mother would always prepare a picnic lunch with sandwiches and snacks. She would make some real fresh Brewed Ice Tea, no powder mixes. My father would carve a watermelon. The cooler would be stocked up with a few extra treats.
Once the parade ended our family would head to the marina where we docked our boat. My father would load the cooler onto the boat and my mother would grab the beach bag filled with towels, hats, and sun block. I was in charge of loading the water skis & tube. My brother would untie us and push us off before he jumped in the boat. We spent 4th of July on the lake boating, water skiing & tubing.
As an adult & mother, I try to recreate some of my favorite childhood memories like, the 4th of July for my family. I spend time planning a menu, shopping, and even creating some fun 4th of July outfits. The night before the 4th of July, I prep the cooler for our picnic and make sure we have all the picnic necessities. I even make my own version of fresh brewed ice tea just like when I was a kid. Check out my recipe for Citrus Infused Ice Tea.
Citrus Infused Ice Tea
What you need:
10- 12 cups of water
1 Lemon
1 Lime
5- 6 tea bags of Bigelow American Breakfast Blend Tea (I picked up from Walmart). I love that Bigelow Tea is an American company that has sent almost 4 million bags of tea to troops overseas with Bigelow’s Tea for Troops program, as a way of saying “Thank you”.
How to:
1. Boil 10- 12 cups of water.
2. Cut up lemon & lime in circles.
3. Place cut up lemon and limes in the bottom of container.
4. Hang 5- 6 tea bags of Bigelow American Breakfast Blend Tea from the pitch.
5. Pour boiling water over the tea bags & fruit.
6. Let seep.
7. Transfer to the refrigerator.
8. Chill until cold or ready to serve over ice.
9. Enjoy.
