Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love decorating, coming up with costume ideas, and dressing up. Each year I add to our Halloween collection and we decorate both indoors and outdoors.
This year, Little Dude is obsessed with all the classic spooky characters, ghosts, spiders, skeletons, goblins, and zombies. Since his is loving all these characters of the night, I decided to incorporate them into decorating this year and he picked out a few new ones.
Our new neighborhood goes all out for Halloween and we are excited to not be the only ones decorating outside. We add a “gravy yard” (as little dude says) outside complete with tombstones, bones, skulls. We still have pumpkins and light up jack- o- lanterns too.
In our new house we have a giant mantel which I absolutely love and there is plenty of room to decorate! We had a beachy theme going on up there and that has since been replaced with a whole lot of spooky. My friend Kate, made a Halloween themed fireplace cover and I just love it so much. I decided to make my own.
One positive thing about moving is the endless supply of boxes. I kept a bunch to use for crafts.
DIY Spooky Halloween Fireplace Cover
What You Need:
Cardboard
Black acrylic paint
Brown acrylic paint
Large stiff brush
Small detail brush
Metal fasteners in assorted sizes
2 pieces of cream colored cardstock paper
How to:
- Turn the gas off at your fireplace.
- Measure your fireplace height & width.
- Cut your box to make one long flat piece. (I used a picture/ mirror box).
- Measure out and mark your fireplaces height & width on the box.
- Cut it out.
- From the scraps, cut out 2 strips for wood boards.
- Put some brown acrylic paint on a paper plate.
- Dip only the tips of the large stiff brush into the brown paint.
- Hold the brush straight up and down and place it on the end of the box.
- Slowly begin dragging the brush down keeping it in the straight up position.
- Once you reach the bottom, lift the brush and place it down next to your first line. Lines don’t have to be straight.
- To create the board look, use your small detail brush paint a line down next to your large stiff brush line.
- Repeat until you have painted your whole board and the 2 pieces of wood.
- Go back with your large stiff brush and make a few knots in the wood.
- To create knots, use the large stiff brush and make a circle with the brush. Scatter the knots around.
- Add some black acrylic paint to the brown acrylic paint on the paper plate and blend paints together a little bit.
- Dip only the tips of the large stiff brush into the black paint using very little paint. (This is going to accent what you have done already and add some more details to give your wood a weathered look).
- Hold the brush straight up and down and place it on the end of the box over where you painted with brown acrylic paint.
- Slowly begin dragging the brush down keeping it in the straight up position.
- Turn the large stiff brush sideways to go over what you painted with your small detail brush.
- Repeat until you have painted your whole board and 2 pieces of wood.
- Go back over your knots with black paint.
- Then on the corners of each “wood piece” on your board add nails with black paint by painting little circles.
- Let Dry.
Assemble on Fireplace…
- Add some silver large and small metal fasteners to the small “wooden” board pieces.
- Cover the fireplace with the large painted cardboard piece.
- On a piece of cream colored cardstock paper trace your hands & forearms.
- Cut out.
- Tuck the “hands” into the fireplace behind your large “wooden” board.
- Then use metal fasteners to attach the small “wooden” pieces to the large board.
- Decorate with “Danger, Keep Out”, Etc. Tape.
- Add some bones, skeletons, skulls, spiders, spider web and anything else spooky.

Oh my gosh that is adorable! We do not have a fireplace that my sister-in-law does and she always keeps it covered so the kiddos won’t get it. This would be a perfect idea for her for Halloween.
